Apple Introduces macOS Sierra, iOS 10, and watchOS 3

Apple have announced key updates to their three operating systems, macOS, iOS, and watchOS which will enable exciting new features, as well as optimise/enhance various tasks.

macOS Sierra

Previously named OS X, Apple have changed the name of their desktop operating system. That is the least of the changes, though, as a host of new features have been introduced – including, for the first time, Siri support for Mac. Additionally, macOS will allow you to manage and automatically sync documents across all your devices, and use Apple Pay to make purchases easily.

macOS Sierra SiriSiri integration means that common tasks, such as sending a message, or locating an important file, or even asking questions is simpler than ever.

Siri On the Mac

  • Locate information and files quickly and easily
  • Ask Siri questions and receive informative answers
  • Dictate messages via Siri

Apple Pay

  • Shop online in Safari and checkout using Apple Pay
  • Authenticate your purchases securely with Touch ID from your iPhone, or Apple Watch

New Photos App

  • Locate your favourite memories, and occasions from your photos with the new Memories feature in the Photos app
  • See your favourite events, trips, and people
  • Find photos you’ve taken from a certain place or by a person using facial, object and scene recognition

More Features

  • Unlock your Mac automatically when wearing your Apple Watch
  • Automatically free up storage space with a new Optimised Storage tool
  • New Apple Music design in iTunes
  • Picture-in-Picture

Detailed information can be found at Apple – so far a release date has not been announced, but Apple have indicated macOS Sierra will be out in early Spring.

iOS 10

Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 10, has received several important additions, with the overhaul of the Messages app and improvements for Photos, HomeKit, News and Apple Music.

“iOS 10 is our biggest release ever, with delightful new ways to express yourself in Messages, a native app for Home automation, and beautifully redesigned apps for Music, Maps, and News that are more intuitive and more powerful, making everything you love about your iPhone, and iPad even better.”

Aside from visual updates, these apps will become smarter and more simple. Services such as Apple Music and Apple News will provide better accessibility and show you the content that matters most, presented with a bold, beautiful new design – these changes will  bring greater clarity, and simplicity to the experience of using those services. Both of the services were introduced last year, Apple confirmed 15 million users use Apple Music while 60 million use Apple News.

Message Updates

  • Animations including balloons, confetti and fireworks
  • Photo annotations, personalised gifs, stickers, rich content, and more
  • Automatic emoji suggestions – simply tap a word to replace with an emoji
  • Ability to send payments, or plan a dinner/movie all from with-in Messages

New Photos App

  • iOS 10 helps find your favourite memories and occasions from your photos
  • See your favourite events, trips, and people
  • Automatically create a Memory Movie from your memories
  • See photos you’ve taken from a certain place or by a person using facial, object and scene recognition

New Home App

  • Manage and control Home-Kit enabled Home Automation devices from one simple app
  • Includes support for lights, thermostats, door locks, and more

More additions

  • Developers can now enable Siri to their apps
  • Re-designed Apple Maps app bringing the ability to book restaurants and services like Uber within the Maps app
  • Bedtime Alarm in the Clock app
  • Live Photos editing

You can see all the new features of iOS 10 from Apple. As with macOS, no exact release day has been announced, however it is projected to be released in Spring.

watchOS 3

Finally, the last important update comes to watchOS, the Apple Watch platform, bringing significant new features, and performance improvements. The new software update will be available to every Apple Watch as a free update later this spring.

Apple have revised the system to make apps load faster, and streamline certain functions in a simpler way, while bringing important brand new features to one of the key components of Apple Watch – Health & Fitness. Users of Apple Watch can not obtain motivation via social engagement and it is now possible to share your exercise progress with friends, family or even personal trainers – you can even earn achievements, and have competitions.

WatchOS-3-Apple-WatchThe activity app, which displays your daily progress, is now optimised for wheelchair users with the Apple Watch – the “time to stand” reminder has been changed to “time to roll,” along with workouts that are specific to wheelchair users.

  • Start a Workout or skip a song much quicker

Health & Fitness

  • Share your fitness and health with friends, and family for social engagement, and motivation
  • Activity app now optimised for wheelchair users with reminders, and workouts specific to them
  • An all-new Breath app encouraging short deep breathing sessions

New Communication

  • Receive stickers, handwriting, full-screen effects, and invisible ink messages (As seen in iOS 10)
  • Smart replies are now even faster
  • New scribble feature to quickly write words

More Features

  • SOS feature to call emergency services
  • More watch faces including Minnie Mouse, Activity, and a new simple elegant Numerals face.

You can see all the new features of watchOS 3 from Apple. Apple Watch is available on the Apple New Zealand, starting at NZ$499 after receiving a NZ$300 price cut earlier on in the year.
